all in the family

I would like to take this Saturday blog post to talk about what should be the most important concern for any technical leader, his family. My family in particular is a very important part of what makes me a great manager, employee, and asset to my Company.

After working till 3 AM last night at a data center conducting a filer shelf install and back up process, I was reminded at 7AM this morning that today was the daughter daddy bar-b-que. Even though the two smiling faces looking back at me tried as they may to inspire ecstasy regarding this event after four hours of sleep, I was less than thrilled. How was I going to explain to them that I was way too tired to spend three hours in the hot sun by a pool at noon?

The quick answer, I wasn't. I wasn't because it meant so much to them. I wasn't because a dad rarely inspires so much joy around an activity that the three of them can spend together with him. I wasn't because in ten years I will be the one begging for a daddy daughter bar-b-que. There was no way I was going to bail out on this event.

As expected, I was tired, and they did push me in the pool as planned to be sure. In the end, it was all well worth it. I am a little more tired than usual, but I took the time, the right time, to make the call for the family.

I highly encourage you to make sure to carve out time for your family. They recharge you, remind you of the reason you are working so hard, and always love you for how hard you try.

Have a great weekend and spend some time with your family!

Thanks
Abel
